Memorial Day
Greetings bloggers. Memorial Day is upon us and I always have a nice feeling about it. The start of summer, the end of winter, and bugs.
I truly like Memorial Day. Not a fancy holiday but for the above reasons I really like it. I feel that every year you MUST have a barbecue with hamburgers and hot dogs. Not steak, not chicken - burgers and dogs. You can even have cheap beer (sorry Dave). We also have the annual Rubber Duck race down the river in Jackson (Home to many of our golf balls).
Your thoughts on Memorial Day.
How about the forth of July?

Just got back from my annual Memorial Day weekend in Acadia, Maine (something like 15 years, minus one, and running). In Rhody, Memorial Day is the start of BBQ and beach season (and also the weekend when almost everybody is finally in their gardens). But since I'm never in Rhody on MemDay, my ritual is somewhat different - generally involving camping, hiking, overeating, reading books and drinking coffee on the rocks outside of Blackwoods, downing a few brews, and catching up with Duffy, the bartender who makes the world's best mojito at a restaurant called Havana in Bar Harbor. That, plus a lot of traffic. Now the Fourth, that's a different animal. Rhody all the way down to the red-white-and-blue median stripe in Bristol. An alcohol-saturated, grease-on-the-grill, fireworks-all-night-over-the-bay, possibly fall asleep in the wrong house kind of thing.

I think I actually like Memorial Day a bit better than the 4th. First, for us 9-5 stiffs it's the first holiday after New Years. As the unofficial first day of summer it also gives you that great feeling of having all of the summer ahead of you. I also love my tradition of riding my bike to the East Providence Memorial Day parade - which is everything a small town parade should be.
Truth is, I never meet a summer holiday I didn't like!

Beers drunk during Memorial Day Weekend: Harpoon IPA. Shipyard Export. Gritty seasonal. Casco Bay pale ale. Magic Hat Lucky Cat. Bar Harbor Real Ale. Brown Hound Ale. And an outstanding organic nut brown ale of unknown origin, discovered at an Italian restaurant in Freeport.
So, yes, you can make a man drink cheap beer on Memorial Day, but it won't make the bud wiser...
