Favorite rituals

What are your rituals during the day or week? By rituals, I'm not talking about obligations or routines (like going to work every day), but those brief moments that you look forward to for one reason or another. For instance, I have a long commute, so my first cup of coffee is brewed while I'm in the shower and drunk on the drive. But it's my second cup of coffee that I enjoy most, because I get it after I finish my morning's work, then walk to the coffee shop about a half-mile away, along a river walk and a bike path, where I've seen osprey, great blue herons, muskrat, beaver, huge snakes, deer and a variety of iridescent blue, green or red dragonflies. It's a small thing, but somehow vitally important in the context of a day.

During the week, I make sure to take a lunchtime walk at least once with my friend Gavin, who is hobbling like I am due to various ailments, preventing us from running. But the walk, usually along the sea wall and beach in Narragansett, or else on the bike path through the Great Swamp, at least gives us a chance to have better discussions than we could have when we were jogging. I've also enjoyed meeting Tom, Emlyn and Em's friend Steve for golf on Wednesday evenings - at least when the golf course has been open. On Saturday, when I'm in Rhode Island, there's the ritual pub lunch and catching up with my friends there. Sundays I put an hour or so into the garden. And every night that I'm home, I usually work on the laptop with the Red Sox game playing on TV.

  • I don't have nearly as many rituals as Doug and I'm jealous. But for me it is probably the first cup of coffee, nay, the first sip, each morning that I enjoy most and look forward to each day.
Oh, yeah, and golfing each week with Jay at Knight's Play.

  • Whoa, hold any horses that need to be held. Did you say playing golf with Jay? Our friend Jay? The Jay? Jay who lives not far from you? That Jay?

  • I love having rituals but I must admit, they are working a bit against me in that I am bordering on becoming OCD. This is making travel very hard for me as I am so geared to doing things a certain way at a certain time I feel uncomfortable being away.

    All that being said...

Golf is something I look forward too as is my coffee with Sam around 9pm (she has juice). I do like the ritual of watching certain TV shows but I try to avoid doing that too much. I also love my run on the weekend, the ritual of always starting and ending on the same route but mixing it up in between.

I think the secret of rituals is to get a good one going and then break it a little at a time, replacing it with a new one - after all, ritual is just another word for habit, isn't it?

  • I agree with you, Tom. I think both rituals and routines need to be broken every so often to be appreciated and to ensure that they don't turn into ruts. And over time they do evolve. But there are rituals that I used to have (especially in New Hampshire - early morning jogs; after-work hikes) that I miss dearly and would love to get back to doing someday. When I travel, I've noticed that one of the first things I try to do is establish rituals. So in Brighton, when I'm visiting Kai, I always start the day with a coffee at Redroasters, where I read The Guardian, write in my journal and plan the rest of the day. When I was in Australia, I ended every day at the same pub ("The Dan"). The rituals ground the rest of the experience.

  • I get up and Molly and I go out and get teh paper and go for a walk, not far, I don't want to have a heart attack too far from home, then I go inside and make coffee and read the paper. It gets weird if have to skip the paper in the morning. Oh yeah and playing (what was it, golf?) yeah golf with Dave. daily

  • I like your comments about grounding the experience, Doug. Rituals as a way to mark and measure time and yet a counter to the flux of our daily lives.

I definitely need to develop some more rituals. Topic Tuesday is now a new one I'm looking forward to.

Maybe I'll start playing golf with Jay...

  • I realized that I have no routine. My life is a blur. But I did realize the closed thing I have to routine is taking the kids to school, saying goodbye to them and then doing my rounds. Seeing who I want to see at the school, be it teachers, or parents or kids. If I don't take the kids or they rarely take the bus, my day doesn't start out right. So I guess that is a routine.
