Topic for Tuesday June 10

What are you listening to these days?

I find for work, either at the office or at home, I like listening to electronic house/trance/house mixes. The driving beat and limited lyrics keeps me moving and up-tempo. Check out djsteveboy.com for two podcasts that I listen to regularly. Podrunner is a good fixed beat mix good for exercise. Grooveelectric is more funky and I actually like this one better.

Last year I discovered North Misissippi All Stars and Andrew W. K.

Since I am a tight wad, I only have a handful of each of their songs, so I can't say I know their music well.

So let me know what's grooving you and maybe I'll find some new music to listen to.

Cheers,
David

  • Just got back from Newport on a sweltering day, grooving to reggae. I've turned into a Rasta, rude boy (minus the weed). Everything from Toots and the Maytals to Marley to Jimmy Cliff to Maroon Town (more ska than reggae) to whatever's floating around in my iPod random play limbo. I also hang out with a young pub crowd, listening to a lot of feel-good music from bands like Dispatch (which evolved from State Radio) and artists like Martin Sexton. Mostly, I just like to mix it up. Very eclectic.

  • Doug, I want your playlist!

  • I'm always changing the playlists, but I'll share a few in an email. Also listening to Radiohead's last album (In Rainbows), The Raconteurs and I like to check out whatever David Byrne's up to. When I'm in an Irish mood, it's Black 47 and The Pogues. When I'm feeling mellow, it's Aimie Mann and classic Cowboy Junkies. When I want to bang my head, it's Beastie Boys and Sublime. I also like Audioslave, Arcade Fire, Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. I can go on forever. I drive a lot. The iPod gets a serious workout.

  • I find that I still listen to older stuff. Like Doug, I have my iPod on shuffle so it bounces through over 9000 songs (yet you still hear the same ones!)
The band that most excited me of late is The Decemberists (www.decemberists.com) which I heard about 18 months ago. Their 5 albums are in my 6 disk car changer and have been since last summer so if I don't want what's on the iPod or radio, I can play one of their disks. From their last album, "The Crane Wife", check out The Crane Wife, parts 1 and 2 - easily the best song that i have heard in 5 or more years. Both musically and lyrically, it harks back to times when both elements meant something.
I also still enjoy The Barenaked Ladies and Counting Crows. I buy more singles than albums now.
For my birthday I got a new turntable for the intent of ripping my old vinyl into the computer. Alas, I find that some of the great albums that I have and remember so fondly, are not as great as I thought.
I also listen to a local radio station that is on in the kitchen all day. They play an ecectic mix from the beatles, to Alison Krauss, to John Hiatt, to Blues and new wave. The music director is our age and has a good sense for what fits. I'm sure that nobody under the age of 30 listens.
The boys listen to alot of classic stuff. Fortunately (or unfortunately) they like most of the songs from the video game, Guitar Hero, which gets them into 70's hard rock.
I do not dare care for most "new" music (Rap, Hip Hop, what the call "pop" now). I am obviously not hip.

  • Addendum:
Here is a link to see a sample playlist from WMWV to see what I hear most of the day in case you were interested.

I think it's a playlist from about 6 months (or more) ago

  • WMWV is one of the reasons, outside of the Clarks, MooseRock and hiking, that I look forward to going to North Conway. You just don't find radio stations around like that anymore. They used to be called album-oriented, but really the idea is to play a wide range of music from different eras, not just rotate same few new songs over and over again until you get sick of them. Another one is WMVY (92.7 on your radio dial), the Martha's Vineyard station. As a bonus you get the weather on top of Mt. Washington (WMWV) and how many people are on stand-by during the next ferry run at Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, Hyannis and Wood's Hole (WMVY).

  • I just went to the WMVY website and you can listen to it on your computer. I will give it a try Doug.
