Topic Tuesday
Boys,
Since we are having a hard time getting online together. I introduce "Topic Tuesday" where each Tuesday, one of us (just one) will introduce a topic to be mulled over, answered, considered, sworn at, confused by, etc. Any topic can be considered: entertainment, education , politics, maple syrup, breakfast houses, is 4 hours too long before calling the doctor, favorites, kittens...anything.
So I tried to figure how to decide who would go first and then in what order. But I ran into a few dilemmas: if we go by first name, Tom will be last; if we go by last name, Tom will be last; if we go by birth dates, Tom will be last; if we go by the names of our children, Tom will be last; if we go by town, Tom will be last. So in order to make it fair - Tom will go last.
I will go first, just to "get the ball rolling" then we will go alpha: Dave, Doug, Jay, Rob, and Tom. Of course if something comes up and you want to throw in a "bonus" Tuesday Topic, please do.
I'll start with a light (sorry, "lite") topic:
Name a few movies that you truly enjoy despite a critical or commercial drubbing (and always get a few minute pause when channel surfing). Feel free to comment on my and others selections
Robs: "Who's That Girl" with Madonna and Griffin Dunne
"Bring It On" - the original only please!
"Armageddon"
I'll probably think of a few more and will add them in the process.
Please enjoy Topic Tuesday and keep it alive!

I'm going to start with two Kurt Russell films. "Big Trouble in Little China" got mixed reviews and was a commercial disaster, but I liked its combination of weird fantasy and quirky humor. Plus it co-starred a pre-"Sex in the City" Kim Catrall. Also, and this one is a bit embarrassing, "Overboard." The Russell-Goldie Hawn flick that's full of cliches but somehow always gets me to tear up. I usually stay with it whenever I'm flicking the channel, at least until the next commercial. Oh, another one came to mind, this time without Kurt Russell. "Zero Effect," a film that almost nobody saw, starring, um, that guy, you'd know him if you saw him, as a neurotic detective genius (pre-"Monk") and Ben Stiller as the normal guy Watson character who gets him the crime gigs (since he's too antisocial to get them for himself).

Great idea, Rob!
I was having a little trouble coming up with some choices until I saw Doug's selections. I would second "Big Trouble in Little China" as a guilty pleasure: plenty of action and campy humor...what's not to like? And that reminded me of another Kurt Russell film (which may have been more successful, so perhaps shouldn't be included): "Escape from New York".
And since I'm stuck in Disney movie hell in my house (and car) I'd have to say "Chicken Little". Pretty much ignored at the time of it's release, I think it is actually a very interesting twist on the story (Spoiler: Aliens are involved). And Zach Braff, Joan Cusack and Steve Zahn's characters are very funny IMHO. Plus it's got music from BNL.
Cheers,
David

I forgot about "Escape from New York." This is making me reassess Russell altogether. He was also terrific as Herb Brooks in the film "Miracle," which I saw with low expectations but ended up thinking was one of the best sports movies I've seen, mainly because of Russell's performance.
Always thought of him as a California guy but just checked out his biography and turns out he was born in Springfield, Mass. and considers Rangely, Maine his hometown.
