Summer Pleasure
I was thinking the other day about movies, that no matter when I see them, I am reminded of summer. (I know my first post was about movies, sorry)
The first one that comes to mind is the first Star Wars. I remember going to the Showcase on a hot summer day and relaxing in the "rocking chair seats" and air conditioning and seeing one of the best (the best?) big screen movie ever. I saw it several times that summer, all with the same reaction. On a side note, when I eat strawberry twizzlers - I think of Star Wars.
Jaws is another, however, I never saw it in the summer, but rather we traveled many times to Lincoln to see it and it was always sold out. I didn't see it till late summer or early fall.
Woody Allen's "Sleeper" is another. I think that also the content of the movie has a summer feel.
Lately I have enjoyed summer animated movies that I have seen with the boys. "Lion King" fits the summer bill too. (The opening sequence and the matching end are worth the price of admission).
I think that The Showcase was the best place for summer movies, for the reasons mentioned above, plus the many movies that were shown at one time and walking out from the dark theater into the hot Seekonk sun. Plus we all went to more movies in the summer together.
Oh yeah, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Star Trek 2 - Wrath of Kahn"
I will think of more I'm sure and add them along to comments. Your thoughts?

You're right, Rob. There is something different about summer movies. And you nailed my top three, first-time viewing, summer movie experiences of all time with "Jaws," "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." I can remember where I was for all three: Seekonk Showcase, Seekonk Showcase, Edgartown Theater on Martha's Vineyard. What I ate: Milk Duds, Milk Duds, Milk Duds. (Nothing wrong with strawberry Twizzlers, mind you.) What the Red Sox did that summer: Lost a heartbreaking World Series to the Reds. Fell out of the race early because of injuries and lost the division to the Yankees. Gave us a pennant race for about half-a-summer but fizzled before I left the Vineyard. Sometimes summer just fits the movie. This past weekend, I went to see "Iron Man." Loved it, but wonder if I'd have enjoyed it as much if I weren't wearing summer clothes, coming off the beach, sated with clam cakes and chowder, and nibbling on Milk Duds and Swedish Fish in an air-conditioned theater that showed the new Batman preview and the old Jimmy Fund commercial, followed by the usher walking up the aisles, collecting change in a carton. Ah, summer....

I remember the Jimmy Fund Ad. Do you remember the one at the Showcase promoting the Flea Market with the annoying guy saying something like, "Yeah...you kid..."

I probably see more films in the winter than the summer these days but I am 100% in agreement that there is something special about summer movies. For me it's the Apple Valley Cinema near the lake cabin that brings back the most memories. Jaws, all those awful 70's car chase movies (Smokey and the Bandit!) and I will never see Annie Hall without being reminded of the awful sunburn I had when I saw it the first time.
I am also reminded of Men in Black, Apollo 13 and Forrest Gump - all movies I saw with Dave and Joann in summers past. In many ways my film tastes have changed and I no longer crave the blockbuster... sometimes I wish I did.
Lastly, I think one of the things that make summer movies so special is the AC... that feeling of walking out into a warm night and if you catch the early show the twilight that tells you there is more fun ahead.
One very last thought... do you think sitting in the Bickford's parking lot and watching the Seekonk Drive-In with crappy radio reception for free is our generations equivalent of downloading pirate movies online? I think it just might be...

Was it the CableCar I seem to remember somewhere in a hazy past where I took unsuspecting Americans to see Picnic At Hanging Rock? And I remember going to see Bread and Chocolate four or five times - an amazing Italian (I think) movie which has disappeared into the dust of time. Most memorable was A Clockwork Orange with a JD type person - we both left the theatre with a strange urge to sing and kick heads at the same time.
Then over at Seekonk - a large group going to see Deer Hunter but a few of us choosing Bedknobs and Broomsticks instead as it was not quite as harrowing - although I have heard of some having nightmares of flying beds and animated armour, so you never know.
Hello y'all by the way!!!
